The Marsabit Wildlife Conservancies Association (MAWICA) is an umbrella regional organization (CBO) whose formation was necessitated by the growth of conservancies’ numbers in Marsabit County. MAWICA plays the role of coordination, capacity building, and fundraising for the conservancies in the region to set conservancies towards the path of sustainable nature conservation to inspire resilient and equitable community development in the face of current and emerging challenges. MAWICA was established in January 2022 and officially registered locally with the Ministry of  labor , state department of social protection.

The CBO represents the voice of communities and undertakes programs and communication on behalf of Marsabit conservancies within the vast community range land. The Marsabit Wildlife Conservancies Association (MAWICA) is formally registered with an established full-time secretariat team.

MAWICA Purpose Statement

The purpose of this Association is to build robust voices for pastoralist communities within the vast rangelands of Marsabit County Kenya by bringing together existing and emerging community conservancies to provide them with a podium from which the conservancies’ leadership and communities conservancies members/stakeholders can dialogue on appropriate issues affecting the communities and advance a mutual understanding on the matters and approaches needed to confront or address them.

1. To promote pastoralism and conservation of bio-cultural and natural heritage to enhance communities’ resilience to climate change.

2. Conservation of nature to enhance people’s well-being

3. To promote intra- and inter-community cohesion, peace and social harmony

4. Advocate for communities’ rights through Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework

5. Secure communities’ land and tenure rights.

6. Establish and strengthen the governance structures of the conservancies

7. Ensure that the conservancies achieve financial sustainability through Nature Based Enterprises
